Deployments

1956 to 1959

USS Princeton (CVS-37) and USS Philippine Sea (CVS-47)were straight deck WWII Essex Class carriers. HS-6 initially flew the HO4S and then the mission-built HSS-1 (now known as the SH-34 from these ships to counter the growing Soviet submarine threat. New technology allowed night dipping in the HSS-1N.

The Kearsarge Years

1960 to 1969

Beginning in 1960 HS-6  became the helo component of newly-former CVSG-53  and deployed aboard this angled deck Essex Class carrier. The SH-34 was replaced by the twin turbine, all-weather capable SH-3A. HS-6 mission expanded to include Mercury program Astronaut recovery and Combat SAR in Vietnam.
